To ensure safety at WANA events, our WANA Bee volunteer Pat Helyer organised a first aid course for WANA volunteers on Saturday, 11th January.
Rupesh from the British Red Cross provided training to 13 WANA Bees in the Parish Room, covering:
Managing an unconscious casualty, using the acronym 'DR ABC'. Rupesh took us through:
Assessing the situation for danger to both the first aider and the casualty
How to check the casualty’s:
responsiveness
airway
breathing
circulation
How to place the casualty into the recovery position
How to manage slips, trips and falls
How to manage the bleeding casualty
How to manage burns
How to recognise a stroke using the acronym 'FAST' Face, Arms, Speech and Time to dial 999
How to recognise a heart attack
How to manage a choking patient
Rupesh reinforced the need to dial 999 or to seek advice from 111
