To ensure safety at WANA events, our WANA Bee volunteer Pat Helyer organised a first aid course for WANA volunteers on Saturday, 11th January.

Rupesh from the British Red Cross provided training to 13 WANA Bees in the Parish Room, covering:

  • Managing an unconscious casualty, using the acronym 'DR ABC'. Rupesh took us through:

  • Assessing the situation for danger to both the first aider and the casualty

  • How to check the casualty’s:

    • responsiveness

    • airway

    • breathing

    • circulation

  • How to place the casualty into the recovery position

  • How to manage slips, trips and falls

  • How to manage the bleeding casualty

  • How to manage burns

  • How to recognise a stroke using the acronym 'FAST' Face, Arms, Speech and Time to dial 999

  • How to recognise a heart attack

  • How to manage a choking patient

Rupesh reinforced the need to dial 999 or to seek advice from 111
