Riverside Blooms Again – In readiness for the Duck Race

A small area of unclaimed land beside the River Anker has been given a wonderful new lease of life thanks to the hard work of local residents and a little help from WANA.
The riverside garden had been looking rather sad and neglected after a long, scorching summer with so little rain, but a £90 grant from WANA enabled residents to replenish the soil and buy new plants to brighten up this lovely tranquil spot beside the river.
Sue Todd, Jane Warwick and Lynne Laine rolled up their sleeves and set to work, clearing the beds, improving the soil and adding a colourful mixture of flowers and plants. The transformation is remarkable. Bright dahlias, sunflowers, begonias and other colourful blooms now sit alongside the established planting, creating an attractive display for residents, walkers and visitors to enjoy.
It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with a relatively small amount of funding, plenty of enthusiasm and a real sense of community spirit.
The garden also appears to have received the seal of approval from some particularly distinguished local residents – the River Anker’s swans, who were keeping a very close eye on proceedings!
A huge thank you goes to Sue, Lynne and Jane for the time, care and hard work they have put into transforming the area, and to WANA for providing the grant that helped make it possible.
And the timing could not be better. Riverside is now looking colourful, welcoming and ready for visitors just in time for the Duck Race.
What a difference £90 – and three determined volunteers – can make!
